The mouse ageing atlas: why different tissues age differently

Single-cell measurements made ageing visible at a much finer scale.

What the research found

The Tabula Muris Senis project profiled cells across 23 mouse tissues and organs over the lifespan. It found age-associated changes within cell types and changes in the mix of cells within tissues. The atlas showed how several recognised features of ageing appear differently across biological contexts. A whole organism therefore cannot be understood through one cell type or one measurement alone.

Where the evidence stops

This is a mouse resource. Associations in a cell atlas do not establish the cause of ageing or identify a safe intervention for an individual person.

The private-client perspective

Personalisation should respect the complexity of the person being assessed. A high-level score can be convenient, but the underlying clinical question may concern cardiovascular risk, muscle function, cognition or recovery. Those questions require different measurements and expertise. A coordinated programme should explain why each assessment was selected, how it is interpreted and when it should be repeated.
