AlphaFold 2: a new starting point for structural biology

What the research found
The AlphaFold 2 Nature paper reported strong performance in the blinded CASP14 assessment, with accuracy competitive with experimental structures in many cases. The authors described the traditional structural bottleneck as months to years of work for a single protein. Google DeepMind’s 2020 technical account described predictions produced in days. These are task-specific comparisons, not a universal time-saving guarantee.
Where the evidence stops
Prediction confidence differs across proteins and regions. Flexible states, interactions and biological function still require careful interpretation. Faster structure prediction does not compress an entire drug-development programme into days.
The private-client perspective
For private longevity research, AI is most useful when its contribution can be stated precisely: a better starting structure, a ranked set of hypotheses or a more focused experiment. The value should be judged against the question being asked and the evidence produced downstream. No computational result should be presented to a client as a treatment recommendation without appropriate clinical validation.
