The jellyfish that changes its life stage

Turritopsis dohrnii offers a striking example of life-cycle reversal.

What the research found

A comparative-genomics study examined Turritopsis dohrnii and a related species, alongside gene-expression changes during life-cycle reversal. The authors identified differences involving DNA maintenance, cellular regulation and other candidate pathways. The animal can return from its medusa stage to an earlier polyp-associated stage under particular conditions, making it a distinctive model for studying biological plasticity.

Where the evidence stops

Life-cycle reversal is not invulnerability: jellyfish can still die. The study does not establish a transferable human treatment or show that an adult person could safely reset all tissues to a younger state.

The private-client perspective

The compelling lesson is the existence of biological programmes that humans do not possess in the same form. Their study can reveal mechanisms worth investigating, but borrowing an animal’s headline is not the same as translating its biology. An evidence-led longevity programme should identify the precise mechanism, test it in relevant systems and distinguish an evolutionary insight from a clinical claim.
