Engineering immune cells to target senescent cells

Senolytic CAR T cells offered a different way to investigate cellular senescence.

What the research found

Researchers studied CAR T cells directed against uPAR, a surface marker associated with some senescent cells. In mice, the approach produced lasting effects on selected age-related metabolic and physical-function measures. The study explored the possibility that engineered immune cells could provide sustained senescent-cell targeting.

Where the evidence stops

These findings do not establish a safe anti-ageing CAR T treatment for people. Target specificity, persistence, unwanted immune effects and the diverse roles of senescent cells require careful investigation.

The private-client perspective

A personalised cell product can sound inherently precise, but personal manufacture does not guarantee selective action or an acceptable risk profile. A research review should explain the target, which healthy cells might share it and whether the intervention can be controlled after administration. Long-lived biological effects make long-term monitoring especially important.
