The protein AI Nobel: AlphaFold, not AlphaGo

The 2024 Chemistry Prize recognised protein prediction and computational design.

What the research found

The 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry awarded one half to David Baker for computational protein design and the other half jointly to Demis Hassabis and John Jumper for protein structure prediction. AlphaFold is the relevant protein-prediction system. AlphaGo is the distinct system known for playing the board game Go.

Where the evidence stops

A Nobel Prize recognises a scientific contribution; it is not approval of a longevity treatment or evidence that a model can safely prescribe care. The prize also does not mean that every protein’s function has been experimentally decoded.

The private-client perspective

For a private research programme, the meaningful legacy is a more powerful set of tools for asking biological questions. Recognition should encourage interest while leaving the standard of evidence unchanged. Clients should be able to trace a claim from the model to the experiment, and from the experiment to a relevant clinical outcome, without relying on prestige as a substitute for data.
