What a cockroach can teach us about regrowing a leg

What the research found
A study of American cockroach leg regeneration identified two transcriptional cascades that help coordinate the process. The work connected BMP and JAK/STAT signalling with growth-related activity, and Notch-associated regulation with aspects of regeneration. In these insects, replacement of a lost limb is linked to subsequent moulting and developmental context.
Where the evidence stops
This is not evidence that cockroaches are indestructible or that human limbs can regrow through the same intervention. Humans do not share the insect’s moulting programme.

Comparative biology can reveal recurring principles such as wound responses, positional information and coordination between growth and patterning. Those principles are more useful than a spectacular headline about survival. A responsible translational programme asks which mechanisms are conserved, which are species-specific and what new evidence would be needed in mammalian tissue.
